Setting up a Private Network

For greater privacy, you can set up your own private storage server. A private storage server works like the public storage server, with some very important distinctions:

You can set up a private server on any computer that you have that's connected to the Internet

A private server creates a ring of trust that consists of your own laptop, your private server, and the computers of your buddies. You can set up a private server up on any computer you like that has a fixed IP address.

Configuring a Private Server

When you set up a private server, you get to decide just who else can access that server: you can allow just individual users, or entire domains of users

(e.g. *.example.com will let anyone with a Kerika ID that includes .example.com to access the server, or even allow an entire domain but exclude certain individuals (e.g. let everyone from *.example.com use the server but not joe@example.com).

So, Kerika really does give you the best of both worlds: instant and direct connectivity with buddies you are online, and a server that holds stuff for those who are offline!

Tip: when setting up your private server make sure you use a computer that (a) it is reliably connected to the Internet, which means a cable connection, not wireless which can be flaky; and (b) won't automatically go to sleep because of inactivity, which means turning off some of the computer's power management.
